We previously reported that the hunt for a new Batgirl was underway. Last we heard, it was down to three choices, and now we’ve learned they’ve made the final pick.
Leslie Grace will star as Batgirl in an upcoming film for HBO Max. The Wrap initially broke the story, and The Hollywood Reporter went on to confirm the reports.
Leslie Grace was last seen in the musical In The Heights. Grace is a Dominican-American, marking the second Latina actress cast in a significant DC role. She’ll follow Sasha Calle, who is starring as Supergirl in Andy Muschietti’s The Flash.
The filmmaking duo behind Bad Boys For Life, Adil El Arbi & Bilall Fallah, will direct Batgirl for HBO Max. Christina Hodson, who wrote Birds of Prey and The Flash, has written the script.
There’s no word yet on where this will fall into the greater DC Films multiverse, and whether it will be a standalone tale or fit into a previously established film world.
This Batgirl film marks the second time the character has appeared on the big screen, with Alicia Silverstone previously portraying a version of the character in Joel Schumacher’s Batman & Robin.
Sources close to Warner Bros. note that the film is likely to hit HBO Max in 2023.
