A couple of years back it was announced that Taika Waititi had signed on to develop an animated Flash Gordon movie for 20th Century Studios, and while there’s been radio silence on the project since we now have word that the film remains in development but is now being viewed as a live-action feature.
“Taika is writing it,” producer John Davis confirmed to Collider. “It was a movie that was a huge influence on him growing up. It is one of his favorite movies. He initially said to me, ‘Let’s do it animated.’ I said, ‘Okay.’ Then we got into it and started developing it and he said, ‘No, let’s do it live-action.’ I said, ‘Even better.'”
“He has the most fantastically interesting vision for this movie,” Davis continues. “And you can only know it is Taika. It is what he does. It is the way he looks at the world. He is the greatest guy in the world. He is the funniest guy in the world. And he thinks on a different plain. And this movie embraces everything that’s special about Taika, and his vision. It harkens in a very interesting way to the original conception from the comics.”

It may well be some time before we see Waititi’s take on Flash Gordon, as he has a rather packed schedule at present. He’s currently juggling post-production on Marvel Studios’ Thor: Love and Thunder with filming on the upcoming pirate comedy series Our Flag Means Death, and is also developing a Time Bandits TV adaptation, as well as the small matter of his Star Wars movie for Disney and Lucasfilm.
