During an appearance on The Beard and the Bald Podcast, The Purge and Captain America actor Frank Grillo has revealed that he’s set to star in a limited series TV remake of the 1981 neo-noir thriller Nighthawks, with original star Sylvester Stallone in the director’s chair.
“We’re redoing Nighthawks as a limited TV series – eight episodes,” said Grillo during an interview for his new movie Copshop [read our review here]. “I’m playing him. [Stallone’s] directing, he’s gonna direct ’em, and then he’s gonna be in it…It’s happening as we speak, we’re selling it right now.”
Originally developed as The French Connection III, Nighthawks was directed by Bruce Malmuth (Hard to Kill, Pentathlon) and starred Stallone and Billy Dee Williams as two New York City cops who find themselves transferred to an elite anti-terrorism squad when an international terrorist (Rutger Hauer) targets the city.
In addition to a Nighthawks series, Grillo has also recently confirmed his return to The Purge franchise, reteaming with series creator James DeMonaco for an as-yet-untitled Purge 6.
