After skipping theaters due to the COVID pandemic and becoming the first major release to break the theatrical window with last year’s Trolls World Tour, it seems that Poppy, Branch and the rest of the Trolls are set for a big screen return in 2023.
As reported by THR, Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Animation have set a November 17th 2023 release date for the as-yet-untitled Trolls 3. As yet, there’s no word on a director, nor any returning cast members, although one would assume that the threequel will reunite most, if not all, of the voice cast from the first two movies, including Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake as Poppy and Branch.
The first Trolls movie released in 2016 and grossed $347 million at the worldwide box office, while Trolls World Tour amassed over $100 million in PVOD receipts after skipping a theatrical release – a move that was met with uproar at the time amongst exhibitors but soon became commonplace during lockdown.
Along with the two feature films, Trolls also spawned the NBC special Trolls Holiday, as well as the animated series Trolls: The Beat Goes On! and Trolls: TrollsTopia. A second animated special, Trolls Holiday in Harmony, premieres on NBC tonight [watch the trailer here].
