It looks like Sony has gained another leading actress for its upcoming Marvel film Madame Web as Sydney Sweeney (Euphoria) is joining Dakota Johnson in the Spider-Man spinoff movie.
Johnson is set for the title role as Madame Web, a mysterious woman with psychic powers and connections to spiders, while Sweeney’s character is being kept under wraps at present.
Created by Denny O’Neil and John Romita Jr. and debuting in 1980’s Amazing Spider-Man #210, Madame Web – a.k.a. Cassandra Webb – is typically depicted in the comic books as an elderly blind woman suffering from the neurological condition myasthenia gravis. This gives her powerful psychic abilities, but leaves her permanently attached to a life support system shaped like a spider web.
S.J. Clarkson (Jessica Jones) is directing Madame Web, which will exist alongside Venom, Morbius, and the planned Kraven the Hunter movie as part of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe. At this point, it is unclear how Sony and director Clarkson plan to translate Madame Web to the screen, but reports have suggested that the character is being viewed as Sony’s version of Doctor Strange.
Sydney Sweeney currently stars as Cassie in HBO’s hit drama series Euphoria, while her big screen credits include Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Amazon’s erotic thriller The Voyeurs.
