The Crooked Man will no longer haunt the cinemas, as James Wan confirms the film is canned.
Since debuting in The Conjuring 2 in 2016, there has been talking about doing a Crooked Man film, but there have been very few updates over the years. There’s been plenty of other movies based in The Conjuring Universe, like the Annabelle films and The Nun, but no word on the Javier Botet-led project.
In a new Instagram post, Wan confirmed that the film is no longer in development. He shared a photo with Botet from The Conjuring 2 and offered a remarkable story about working with the legendary actor. In the post, he also said the project is no longer part of Warner’s slate.
“No, unfortunately, the spin-off movie with this character isn’t happening,” says Wan. He adds, “Outside of my control. But maybe one day.”

The ‘outside of my control’ part seems to be about David Zaslav and his continued change to Warner Bros Discovery. Zaslav is now infamous for canning projects at WBD, even if it’s already finished (like he did with Batgirl).
With Wan’s Crooked Man spin-off seemingly in developmental hell for years, the President and CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery must’ve seen it as dead on arrival. Though, fear not James Wan fans, as the filmmaker still has The Nun 2 and another mainline Conjuring film in the works.
