While Superman on film is preparing to go through some drastic changes with Henry Cavill and James Gunn announcing his departure from the role, the Man of Steel is still flying high on television as The CW has announced the third season of Superman & Lois is set to premiere Tuesday, March 14th, 2023. Not only that, but Superman’s archnemesis Lex Luthor will finally appear on the series.
Season 3 will feature Tyler Hoechlin, Elizabeth Tulloch and Alex Garfin reprising their roles as Clark Kent/Superman, Lois Lane and Jordan Kent with Michael Bishop taking over the role of Jonathan Kent. As Clark and Lois work together once again in Smallville’s newspaper, the Smallville Gazette, but trying balance their work, superhero and family life along with the increased number of people who know their family secret causes untold complications and dangers to their lives.
The official synopsis for the third season reads:
The third season of Superman & Lois opens weeks after Superman’s blowout defeat of Ally Allston. Clark (Hoechlin) and Lois (Tulloch) now are working at the Smallville Gazette together and enjoying small town life. But the Kents’ romantic bliss only shines a light on how isolating “the secret” can be, as Chrissy (Sofia Hasmik) struggles to balance a new love interest and her friendship with Lois. However, Lois’ own work-life balance is put to the test when an undercover assignment reveals a deadly foe that promises to change the Kent family forever. Superman would move heaven and earth for his family, but with a villain this merciless, even that might not be enough.
Meanwhile, the Kent boys find themselves being pulled in opposite directions as Jordan (Alex Garfin) discovers what a superhero-identity really means and Jonathan (Michael Bishop) searches for purpose beyond the football field. Amid all this upheaval, John Henry (Wolé Parks) is haunted by his doppelgänger’s past, leading to dangerous consequences for him and Natalie (Tayler Buck). Lana Lang (Emmanuelle Chriqui) and Kyle (Erik Valdez) redefine their family post-separation, while Sarah (Inde Navarrette) explores what the future holds for her and Jordan now that she knows the truth about his powers. Having learned the hard way that no one else can be trusted to work with Superman, General Samuel Lane (Dylan Walsh) reclaims his post at the Department of Defense, only to face his own conflict in working with his grandson, Jordan.
The deadly foe referred to is none other than Lex Luthor, Superman’s archnemesis and perhaps most dangerous adversary. Despite being a CW series connected to the Arrowverse with Hoechlin and Tulloch having originated their roles in the Arrowverse crossovers as well as a couple actors reprising their roles in the series, Superman & Lois‘ Lex Luthor will not be played by Supergirl‘s Jon Cryer as the show is going for a different take. Cryer himself confirmed this on Twitter by revealing DC let him know the news in advance and it would have been unlikely for him to reprise the role anyway due to scheduling conflicts as he prepares for a new show on NBC.
And for the record, the folks at DC were very cool and gave me a heads up that the show was going a different way with character before they started looking.
Most of the time, actors learn about this stuff when it comes out in the trades. I’m grateful they were classy about it.
