Glen Powell is flying high these days. From his days as a moronic heartthrob on Scream Queens to his scene-stealing role in Top Gun: Maverick, Powell is a go-to actor for a solid leading role. And now, he’ll prove that with Twisters, a new sequel to the cult classic Twister from 1996.
The Hot Mic podcast recently broke the news that Glen Powell is in talks to star opposite Daisy Edgar-Jones in the Universal and Amblin Entertainment project. Twisters will be helmed by Minari filmmaker Lee Isaac Chung, with a script from The Revenant writer Mark L. Smith.
Little is known about the project, but it’s described as “the next chapter” in the Twister story. The original Twister in 1996 followed a team of storm-chasers as they hunted down the most powerful tornado in decades. The film starred Helen Hunt, Bill Paxton, Carey Elwes, and Philip Seymour Hoffman, which made nearly $500 million at the box office and received two Oscar nominations.
Powell is on a hot streak at the moment; the actor will appear in Richard Linklater’s action-comedy Hitman, which Powell co-wrote and co-produced. He’ll also feature in Chris Morgan’s sci-fi thriller Deputy X, buddy comedy Foreign Relations opposite Nick Jonas, and an untitled R-rated rom-com with Sydney Sweeney from director Will Gluck.
Twisters is set to release on July 19, 2024.
