After a few weeks of speculation with The CW cancelling numerous shows as the network strives for budget cuts, it has finally been confirmed that Superman & Lois has been renewed for a fourth season. The series was renewed alongside All American: Homecoming.
Superman & Lois follows the pair as they raise their teenaged boys, one of whom has inherited Superman’s Kryptonian powers, in Smallville. The third season is coming to a close soon with two episodes remaining that will introduce Superman’s archnemesis Lex Luthor to the series as he is released from prison after spending nearly 20 years behind bars and will likely be looking to get revenge on the two people responsible for putting him there: Superman and Lois Lane.
“We are thrilled to bring All American: Homecoming and Superman & Lois back to The CW,” said Brad Schwartz, President of Entertainment for The CW. “These series are two of our strongest performers across our linear and digital platforms with some of the most passionate fanbases in all of television. We are grateful to our partners at Warner Bros. Television and Berlanti Productions for their continued collaboration, and we cannot wait to get started on the new seasons.”
While Superman & Lois‘ renewal is good news, it comes with big changes expected as part of The CW’s cost-cutting measures. The fourth season will have massive budget cuts starting with an order of 10-episodes rather than season three’s 13. It has been reported by Deadline the network will reduce the amount of actors billed as series regular cast members, likely to affect the series’ supporting characters. Additionally, while the show will still feature the superhero aspect of Superman’s adventures the fourth season may focus more on the family drama surrounding the Kents.
