When Bob Iger returned to Disney, we knew things were changing for the company. Executives would be fired, budgets would be cut, and now it seems movies are no longer coming out.
There’s word that Iger has halted production on one of Disney’s potential live-action remakes, with the Disney head honcho cutting off development on The Hunchback of Notre Dame. The DisInsider notes in a new report that the film is currently dead at Disney, but could always be brought back.
The report claims: “Now that Bob Iger is back in the driver’s seat, it is highly unlikely that the project will move forward as Iger is not the biggest fan of Hunchback of Notre Dame, and a remake isn’t in their list of priorities. Things can obviously change, but this is the most recent information we have on the project.”
Development of the project began in 2019 when it was revealed that the script would be written by David Henry Hwang, with Josh Gad producing and possibly playing the role of Quasimodo. Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz were to return to create the soundtrack.
Not long ago, legendary composer Alan Menkin was asked about the project. While he seemingly had left the door open, doubt started to arise when he told Comicbook.com in May, “I have no idea. It’s a tough one because the Hunchback movie, Hunchback story involves a lot of real, real issues that are important issues and should be explored to be discussed. And there has to be an agreement about how we deal with those issues. You know, do we do a Hunchback without ‘Hellfire?’ I don’t think so. So it sits in this limbo right now.”
Disney has quite the slate for live-action remakes to tackle, so putting the project on hold could be for the best. At the time of writing, Disney is working on live-action remakes of Moana, Lilo & Stitch, Hercules, and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs – the latter of which has already started production.
