After decades of Godzilla films, some being family-friendly while others are American box office fodder, Toho is taking the franchise back to a more serious direction with their latest installment.
In what is considered the 37th film in the Godzilla franchise, Godzilla Minus One takes us back to Japan between 1945 and 1947 to showcase the devastation caused by the war and the monstrous kaiju running wild. In Godzilla Minus One, we are in post-war Japan, and the country’s economic state has been reduced to zero. Godzilla appears and plunges the country into a negative state.
The film was written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki, who also handled VFX for the project. Check out the trailer and poster below…
In postwar Japan, a new terror rises: Godzilla. Will the devastated people be able to survive…let alone fight back?
The film stars Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, Yuki Yamada, Munetaka Aoki, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Sakura Ando, and Kuranosuke Sasaki.
Godzilla Minus One is slated to screen as the closing film at the 36th Tokyo International Film Festival on November 1st, 2023. Afterwards, the film will be released in Japan on November 3rd to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the first film’s original release a year prior and will then premiere in theatres across the United States on December 1st, 2023.
