Matthew Vaughn on how to fix Star Wars: Reboot the Skywalker story

October 20, 2023 by EJ Moreno

If you ask filmmaker Matthew Vaughn about the issues with Star Wars these days, it seems like he has the solution for all their box office and fan woes.

While promoting his upcoming film Argylle, Vaughn held nothing back when discussing the massive franchise and its problems.

While appearing on the Happy Sad Podcast, the filmmaker comes up with his problem-solver: a reboot!

Vaughn notes, “Now, not so much. For me, doing a Star Wars movie is to play with the characters I love. If they said to me they’d reboot Star Wars and actually have Luke Skywalker, Solo, and Vader and do your version of it. Everyone would say you’re an idiot to try, but that would excite me.”

Vaughn questions why the franchise is afraid to handle their more iconic legacy characters: “Why are the [Star Wars] characters so hallowed that from 1977 you can’t re-do it for a new audience?” he asked.

“Star Wars is the Skywalker family, and that’s where I think they’ve gone wrong. They’ve forgot,” he continues. “They’ve done brilliantly in TV, but it needs an epic new film. That’s would do [i.e., reboot Luke]. Everyone is going to go batshit crazy, but let’s bring it on. If you want a new generation, make the movie for them. The old generation, hopefully, you make it well enough that they enjoy it.”

Check out Vaughn’s full interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast below…

Elly Conway (Bryce Dallas Howard), an introverted spy novelist who seldom leaves her home, is drawn into the real world of espionage when the plots of her books get a little too close to the activities of a sinister underground syndicate. When Aiden (Sam Rockwell), a spy, shows up to save her (he says) from being kidnapped or killed (or both), Elly and her beloved cat Alfie are plunged into a covert world where nothing, and no one, is what it seems.

The film features an ensemble cast that includes Henry Cavill, Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Rockwell, Bryan Cranston, Catherine O’Hara, Dua Lipa, Ariana DeBose, John Cena, and Samuel L. Jackson.

Argylle is scheduled to be released in the United States on February 2, 2024, by Universal Pictures theatrically and on Apple TV+ at an undetermined date.
