After a long wait, the third TRON film is gearing back up for production in early 2024 once the holidays conclude per a report from Collider. TRON: Ares will star Jared Leto in the lead role with Joachim Rønning (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales) directing.
TRON: Ares was supposed to begin production in August of this year, but was forced to delay due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. It was a situation Rønning was not entirely happy with as he lamented on what was to be the film’s first day of production, urging both unions and the AMPTP to come to a faster agreement so TRON: Ares and several other productions could get back to work.
The screenplay was written by Jesse Wigutow and Jack Thorne and will “focus on the emergence of a sentient program that crosses over into the human world that is not ready for contact.” Leto will play Ares, the sentient program. While the main cast has been announced, it is unknown if Jeff Bridges will again reprise his role as Kevin Flynn from the previous films or if Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde will also return after starring in TRON: Legacy.
Starring alongside Leto is Greta Lee (The Morning Show) as a video game programmer and tech CEO. Also starring in the film are Jodie Turner-Smith (Queen & Slim), Evan Peters (Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story), Cameron Monaghan (Shameless) and Sarah Desjardins (Yellowjackets).
