James Gunn reveals Superman: Legacy production start date

December 23, 2023 by Ricky Church

With anticipation for James Gunn’s first entry into the new DC movie universe with Superman: Legacy growing, he’s had to fend off a mounting number of rumours regarding the film. While he debunked a new rumour of the film’s plot, he did reveal when production for Superman’s latest onscreen adventure will take flight.

On Threads, Gunn took issue with a report that incorrectly listed the film’s logline, clarifying he “wouldn’t describe the plot this way,” but he did confirm the other half of the report that said filming on Superman: Legacy would begin in March 2024.

“We shoot in March. I’m grateful every day our production team worked their asses off to keep things going through the strikes. Forces impelled us to stop many times – & if we had we’d never make July 2025,” Gunn said on the social media platform.

This isn’t the first time Gunn has debunked rumours around the film nor will it likely be the last. Just last week he shut down reports his Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 actor Pom Klementieff had been cast in Superman: Legacy. With production just around the corner, we should be hearing more accurate reports on the film in the coming months.

“Superman: Legacy tells the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice, and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.”

Superman: Legacy stars David Corenswet as Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern/Guy Gardner, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, and María Gabriela De Faría as The Engineer.

Superman: Legacy is scheduled to open in theaters on July 11th, 2025.
