John Waters is back, breaking a 20-year hiatus as a filmmaker and bringing Aubrey Plaza into his Dreamland as World of Reel confirms that the legendary cult director is set to helm Liarmouth, an adaptation of his self-described “perfectly perverted feel-bad romance.”
Actress Aubrey Plaza has been circling the role but has officially landed the leading part in this filth experience.
Liarmouth follows Marsha Sprinkle, described as “a suitcase thief, scammer, and master of disguise. Dogs and children hate her. Her own family wants her dead. She’s smart, she’s desperate, she’s disturbed, and she’s on the run with a big chip on her shoulder. They call her Liarmouth―until one insane man makes her tell the truth.”
This feels like fate as Plaza mentioned wanting to play a role in a new Waters project, telling Daze in 2020, “I emailed him immediately and said, ‘You better let me audition for you. I even look like the girl on the cover” of the book. “I’m throwing myself at his feet,” she added. “I’ll do anything to get the part. I mean anything.”

John Waters’ last movie was 2004’s A Dirty Shame, a polarizing filthy comedy that put the filmmaker in the dreaded “Director’s Jail.” Since then, though, he’s penned a few best-selling novels and has remained a staple in pop culture.
Waters reportedly completed the script, and production is currently assembling the budget and supporting cast.
