Steven Spielberg becomes first director to gross $10 billion at the worldwide box office

April 21, 2018 by Gary Collinson

With his latest film Ready Player One hitting $500 million worldwide, Steven Spielberg has become the first director in history whose movies have crossed the $10 billion mark at the global box office.

Spielberg has reached the total with 32 movies across his career, giving him a solid lead over the nearest competition, Peter Jackson, whose movies have earned $6.5 billion combined.

The $10 billion figure does not account for inflation, or any of the numerous movies he’s produced and executive produced over the years. Incorporating those figures, the legendary filmmaker has pulled a whipping $24 billion, with Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom likely to take him beyond the $25 billion mark.

Incredible, Spielberg is yet to pass $1 billion at the box office with any of his directorial efforts, the highest being Jurassic Park on $983.8 million, followed by Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull on $786.6 million and E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial on $717 million.

Next up for Spielberg is Indiana Jones 5, while he is also developing a West Side Story remake, as well as the DC movie Blackhawk.
