Given that they were paired up in Captain America: Civil War and Spider-Man: Homecoming, it made perfect sense that Tom Holland’s Peter Parker and Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark would find themselves reuniting in Avengers: Infinity War.
The pairing gave us some great moments in the Marvel blockbuster, as well as a heartbreaking final scene between the two. However, it almost wasn’t the case, as co-writer Christopher Markus has revealed that the original plan was for Anthony Mackie’s Falcon to accompany Iron Man into space.
“There was one [version] where Spider-Man did not go to space, and where Falcon went to space,” said Markus. “And it was fun, it was interesting, it’s always great to have those guys in various situations and there was a lot to do with them in both situations, but we weren’t getting as much emotion as we could if we brought them back to people who know them.”
As it happens, Falcon didn’t have much to do in Infinity War (clocking up a reported 2 minutes and 15 seconds of screen time), and it would be interesting to hear what Spider-Man’s role in the movie would have been had they not made the decision to reunite Peter with Iron Man.
