Filmmaker Steven Soderbergh has enlisted Meryl Streep (The Post), Antonio Banderas (Genius) and Gary Oldman (Darkest Hour) to star in his new project The Laundromat, which deals with the Panama Papers scandal.
Based on Jake Bernstein’s book Secrecy World: Inside the Panama Papers Investigation of Illicit Money Networks and the Global Elite and scripted by Scott Z. Burns (Contagion), The Laundromat will explore the revelations that came out of the leaked documents from Panama-based law firm Mossack Fonseca, which detailed the various investments by the wealthy and powerful designed to evade taxes.
Soderbergh’s movie is one of two competing projects dealing with the scandal, with Netflix prepping its own film, based upon the book Panama Papers: Breaking the Story of How the World’s Rich and Powerful Hide Their Money by German journalists Fredrik Obermaier and Basian Obermayer.
