It looks like the MonsterVerse isn’t the only cinematic universe that Godzilla is going to find himself stomping around in, as Toho has announced that it is planning its own Godzilla Universe beginning in 2021.
“The future of the series and its forward development are very conscious of the method of ‘shared universe’,” states Toho’s Keiji Ota to Japanese website Nikkei Style (translated via Godzilla Movies). “Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah, etc. could all share a single world much like a Marvel movie where Iron Man and the Hulk can crossover with each other. It is said that each movie can be a possible film production where any one of them could lead a film of their own as the titular character.”
Toho’s last live action Godzilla movie was 2016’s acclaimed Shin Godzilla, while the studio also released the 2017 anime feature Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters and its 2018 sequel Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle.
Over in the U.S., Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures have Godzilla: King of the Monsters incoming in 2019, followed by its own crossover Godzilla vs. Kong in 2020.
