Ryan Reynolds explains how Deadpool 2 chose its pop culture references

August 16, 2018 by Samuel Brace

Ryan Reynolds, the star of Deadpool 2, has spoken about how the film chose its pop culture references and when to implement them.

One of the most fun aspects of Deadpool the character is his love of pop culture, referencing real-world individuals and events quite unlike any other superhero.

In the home video commentary for the Super Duper Cut of the film (via ComicBook.com), co-writer Paul Wernick and Reynolds had a chat about how these pop culture references come to be: “Talk about the delicate balance of pop culture references, Ryan. Kind of how we ride that line,” Wernick said.

“Yeah, you want them sprinkled throughout the movie,” Reynolds said. “You don’t wanna overdo, though, either, and you try to wanna find stuff that’s not, you know, as you guys know, that’s not just of the moment and out the next second. Sometimes they’re just off the cuff, and we just fucking roll with it. I love that Deadpool’s so invested in pop culture and drags it into every scene he can.”

We can certainly expect many more references in future movies but are you as fond of Deadpool’s love of pop culture as Reynolds is? There’s no question it adds a unique dimension to his character.

Marvel’s motormouth mercenary is back! Bigger, better and occasionally more pantless than ever before. When a super soldier arrives on a murderous mission, Deadpool is forced to think about friendship, family and what it really means to be a hero – all while kicking 50 shades of ass. Because, sometimes, to do the right thing you need to fight dirty.

Deadpool 2 sees David Leitch (John Wick) directing a cast that includes returning stars Ryan Reynolds (Wade Wilson), Morena Baccarin (Vanessa), T.J. Miller (Weasel), Brianna Hildebrand (Negasonic Teenage Warhead), Stefan Kapicic (Colossus), Leslie Uggams (Blind Al) and Karan Soni (Dopinder) alongside new additions Zazie Beetz (Atlanta) as Domino, Josh Brolin (Avengers: Infinity War) as Cable, Terry Crews (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) as Bedlam, Lewis Tan (Iron Fist) as Shatterstar, Bill Skarsgard (It) as Zeitgeist, Rob Delaney (Catastrophe), Julian Dennison (Hunt for the Wilderpeople) as Russell, Jack Kesy (The Strain) as Black Tom Cassidy and Shioli Kutsuna (The Outsider) as Yukio.
