THR is reporting that Steve Carell is set for a return to the small screen, with The Office star signing up for a series regular role alongside Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston in Apple’s breakfast TV drama.
The as-yet-untitled series, which is based on Brian Stelter’s book Top of the Morning: Inside the Cutthroat World of Morning TV, has received a two-season, 20-episode order and will provide an inside look at the lives of those who help America wake up in the morning.
In addition to Carell, Billy Crudup (Gypsy) and Gugu Mbatha-Raw (A Wrinkle in Time) have also been cast in the show, which is written by Kerry Ehrin, who also serves as showrunner.
Since wrapping The Office in 2011, Carell has starred in a number of feature films including Foxcatcher, The Big Short, Battle of the Sexes and Beautiful Boy. He will soon be seen playing Donald Rumsfeld in Adam McKay’s Vice, and also stars in Robert Zemeckis’ fantasy drama Welcome to Marwen.
