Venom passes $500 million worldwide, on course to become Sony’s most profitable Marvel release

October 29, 2018 by Gary Collinson

After setting an October opening weekend record at the domestic box office earlier this month, Sony’s Tom Hardy-led Spider-Man spinoff Venom has now pushed its worldwide haul beyond the half billion dollar mark in its fourth weekend.

The film, based upon the fan favourite Marvel villain, has grossed $187.3 million domestically, plus a further $321.1 million from the international markets, for a global take of $508.4 million.

With a China release still to come on November 9th, analysts are predicting that Venom could finish its run with around $650 million in total. That could potentially make the $100 million blockbuster Sony’s most profitable Marvel movie to date, putting it ahead of the six previous Spider-Man movies in terms of budget to gross (that record is currently held by the first Spider-Man, which earned 6.3 times its $130 million budget upon release in 2002).

One of Marvel’s most enigmatic, complex and badass characters comes to the big screen, starring Academy Award nominated actor Tom Hardy as the lethal protector Venom.

Venom is directed by Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland) and features a cast that includes Tom Hardy, Riz Ahmed, Michelle Williams, Woody Harrelson, Jenny Slate, Reid Scott, Scott Haze, Sope Aluko and Ron Cephas Jones.
