Rumour: Matt Reeves and Ben Affleck reportedly have different visions for The Batman

November 6, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Having boarded the project last year after Ben Affleck chose to exit the director’s chair, Matt Reeves (War for the Planet of the Apes) recently completed work on the first draft of the script for Warner Bros. and DC Films’ The Batman, and has expressed his hope that cameras could get rolling on the Dark Knight solo movie in the spring of 2019.

There’s been an incredible amount of speculation with regards to The Batman, much of it revolving around Ben Affleck’s ongoing status as the Caped Crusader, and now we have some more courtesy of Revenge of the Fans, which claims that while Affleck has been warming to the idea of a return in recent weeks, Reeves remains keen to go in a new direction with a younger actor taking on the role.

According to the site, Warner Bros. hopes to keep Affleck on board, and the studio recently suggested that he appear in bookend sequences, with a new actor then appearing as a younger Bruce Wayne for an adventure taking place earlier in the crime-fighter’s career. However, Reeves rejected the idea, as he wants to distance his Batman as far as possible from the established DC Extended Universe.

It’s worth nothing that Revenge of the Fans has a mixed track record, so this may well be nothing more than speculation. However, if Reeves is hoping to start production in the spring, we’ll hopefully get some official news and clarification in the very near future.
