Venom closing in on $675 million worldwide after huge China debut

November 11, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Sony’s Venom is storming towards the $700 million mark at the global box office thanks to a whopping $111 million opening in China this weekend, the second-biggest for a superhero movie behind Avengers: Infinity War ($191 million).

Venom’s $111 million weekend in China already puts it ahead of the total grosses of Logan ($106 million), Black Panther ($105 million), Wonder Woman ($90 million) and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 ($94 million), and just shy of the $116.3 million that Spider-Man: Homecoming amassed during its run in the Middle Kingdom.

Worldwide, Venom has now amassed $673.5 million, of which $206.2 million is from North America and $467 million from the international markets and it may well go on to surpass The Amazing Spider-Man 2 ($709 million), The Amazing Spider-Man ($757.9 million) and perhaps even Spider-Man 2 ($783.8 million) by the time it finishes up in cinemas.

Given its budget of just $100 million, it’s hard to describe the Tom Hardy-headlined Spidey spinoff as anything but an enormous success for Sony.

One of Marvel’s most enigmatic, complex and badass characters comes to the big screen, starring Academy Award nominated actor Tom Hardy as the lethal protector Venom.

Venom is directed by Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland) and features a cast that includes Tom Hardy, Riz Ahmed, Michelle Williams, Woody Harrelson, Jenny Slate, Reid Scott, Scott Haze, Sope Aluko and Ron Cephas Jones.
