The Haunting of Hill House creator rejects the Red Room ending theory

November 28, 2018 by Samuel Brace

Mike Flanagan, the creator of Netflix’s The Haunting of Hill House, has said that the Red Room ending fan theory isn’t true.

The Haunting of Hill House was a massive hit for Netflix, with fans around the world speaking very highly of the horror series adaptation of Shirley Jackson’s book. The show has ended after just one season but some fans have a theory about what was otherwise a fairly happy ending.

The theory is that the characters that seemingly got out of the house alive actually never left the terrifying Red Room that they were earlier trapped in, with fans pointing to the use of red colour in the show’s final moments.

However, the show’s creator Mike Flanagan, has shot down the theory, telling TV Line that the ending can be taken at face value: “Hugh is dead, Nell is dead, Olivia is still dead. I always looked at it as just having a hint of peace, just a glimpse into the fact that life goes on, and there’s some acceptance for the surviving characters… Acceptance, peace and a little forgiveness doesn’t lessen the loss they experience in that episode; it only shows that life has a way of going on, and that these characters are finally accepting of that.”

So, while the theory was a fun one, it doesn’t appear to have any credibility left now. What do you think of the ending to The Haunting of Hill House?

The Haunting of Hill House is a modern reimagining of Shirley Jackson’s legendary novel of the same name, about five siblings who grew up in the most famous haunted house in America. Now adults, they’re reunited by the suicide of their youngest sister, which forces them to finally confront the ghosts of their own pasts… some which lurk in their minds… and some which may really be lurking in the shadows of the iconic Hill House.
