Below are the top 10 films of 2019 we are looking forward to the most with some surprises in store for what are the most anticipated ones. Check out our thoughts below…
10. Us (March 15th, 2019)
Jordan Peele’s directorial debut Get Out got a lot of people talking about what a great horror film it was. It was one of the most profitable films of 2017, earning a total of $255 million off a $4.5 million budget and was a hit with critics. The film earned Peele, who wrote the script, an Oscar award for Best Original Screenplay, one of the very few given out to a horror film at the Oscars.
Peele’s follow up film Us sounds pretty intriguing. Starring Black Panther‘s Lupita Nyong’o and Winston Duke, as well as The Handmaid’s Tale‘s Elizabeth Moss, Us sees Nyong’o and Duke taking their family to a beach house where their vacation is ruined by unwanted visitors. It sounds like a typical horror film, but Peele has proven himself to take tried and true concepts and turn them on their heads for something fresh. Also starring Tim Heidecker (Tim and Eric’s Bedtime Stories), Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Aquaman), Anna Diop (Titans) and Shahadi Wright Joseph (The Lion King), Us is going to be a very interesting film to wait for.
9. Spider-Man: Far From Home (July 5th, 2019)
Even though we just got a Spider-Man film with Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, we can’t wait for more of Marvel’s arguably most recognizable hero to webswing into theatres again. Once the dust settles (pun intended) on Avengers: Endgame, the Marvel Cinematic Universe will treat fans to a new Spidey adventure with Spider-Man: Far From Home, a follow up to Homecoming.
Not much is entirely known about Far From Home, save for the fact that it apparently takes place after Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. What we do know is fairly exciting as Jake Gyllenhaal, who was once up for the role of Spidey when it looked like Tobey Maguire might have had to vacate it after an injury, will play the villain Mysterio, who will be making his onscreen debut. A trailer from Brazil’s CCXP was shown to audiences there and whole it has yet to be released online, descriptions have said Spidey and Mysterio seem to actually be working together (for a bit anyway) against a group of enemies called the Elementals. A new variation of Spidey’s suit called the Stealth Suit (which is a modern riff on Spider-Man Noir) was also released. Coupled with the information from CCXP, it makes the new Spider-Man film quite intriguing.
8. Joker (October 4th, 2019)
The Joker, Batman’s arch nemesis and one of the most well know villains in all of pop culture, will be getting his own film next year. However, rather than feature Jared Leto as the Clown Prince of Crime and set within the same continuity as the DCEU, Joker will instead be a standalone film separate from all other interpretations of the villain with Joaquin Phoenix (You Were Never Really Here) as Joker with Todd Philips (The Hangover trilogy) directing.
What sets Joker apart from the other comic book films next year is the premise. Philips and Phoenix intend to tell an origin story for Joker that is grounded and described as “a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale”. Phoenix will star as Arthur Fleck, a failing comedian who is destined to become Batman’s enemy and terrorize Gotham City. Just the visual look of The Joker is different from other interpretations and it sounds like it will be a much more dramatic and serious film than most other comic book films. With a cast that includes Robert De Niro, Zazie Beats and Frances Conroy, Joker definitely has us interested in the next iteration of Gotham’s number one psycho.
