The ABC Murders is the second of three adaptations from Agatha Christie Limited to air on Amazon Prime. The novel was written in 1936 by Christie and is notable for her further experimentation with shifting points of view in the narrative. The series is already premiering on BBC One, with its finale to air tonight, while its Amazon Prime premiere is set for February 1, 2019.
The first Christie series for the BBC and Amazon was Ordeal By Innocence starring Bill Nighy, Anthony Boyle, Anna Chancellor and Matthew Goode among others. A third limited series is set in their deal. Meanwhile, Christie fans will get a further dose of Poirot as Kenneth Branagh is set to reprise his role as the detective in and direct the adaptation of Death on the Nile, a sequel to Branagh’s Murder on the Orient Express. The film will star him, Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman) and Armie Hammer (On The Basis of Sex).
Bafta nominated writer Sarah Phelps returns to explore the 20th Century through Christie’s work. This time the setting is the 1930s, a time when the nation is dangerously divided and suspicion and hatred are on the rise. In the midst of this, Poirot faces a serial killer known only as A.B.C. First the killer strikes in Andover, then Bexhill. As the murder count rises, the only clue is the copy of The ABC Railway Guide at each crime scene. Poirot’s investigations are thwarted at every turn by an enemy determined to outsmart him. If Poirot is to match his nemesis then everything about him will be called into question: his authority, his integrity, his past, his identity.
The ABC Murders features a cast that also includes Rupert Grint (Harry Potter), Andrew Buchan (Broadchurch), Eamon Farren (Twin Peaks), Tara Fitzgerald (Game of Thrones), Bronwyn James (Harlots), Freya Mavor (The Sense of an Ending), Shirley Henderson (Happy Valley), Kevin McNally (Legend), Gregor Fisher (Love Actually) and Jack Farthing (Poldark). The series is directed by Alex Gabassi and produced by Farah Abushwesha.
