Comic Book Review – Newbury & Hobbes: The Undying #4

February 1, 2019 by Calum Petrie

Calum Petrie reviews Newbury & Hobbes: The Undying #4…

The final issue in the Undying series has the two titular characters facing off against a ghost from their past. Not only does the fate of the ever faithful man servant lie in the balance, but so too does the fate of every person who has been secretly fitted with a bomb under their skin. The horrible situation makes for rash decisions and radical action as the two race against the clock.

This issue contains probably the most human element of the the four-part series. The story can rely on a steampunk Victorian London, a inventor genius who plays by his own rules or even the female lead that is a kick ass agent, but it still comes down to a good old fashioned fight.

There’s a fight sequence which takes place on motorised carriages that would normally have a horse, and the shoot out turns into a fight when the characters have been pushed to their breaking points over recent events. The sequence plays out very well while building up the to finale in a adequate manner.

The showdown against the series’ big bad is a relatively short affair but does not take away much from the characters’ personalities and development. The issue ends on a relatively positive note while not wrapping everything up in a neat little bow. This is not the final adventure for this duo, but hopefully it’s the last time they recycle a villain, as on this occasion it had a relatively anti-climactic outing.

Rating – 8/10
