After starting its international roll out earlier this month, Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World made its way to North America this past weekend, where it delivered a franchise-best opening of $58 million including previews.
“We’ve been eagerly awaiting our first DreamWorks Animation release, and it’s great to celebrate this milestone with a No. 1 opening,” said Jim Orr, Universal’s head of domestic distribution. “Director Dean DeBlois has delivered a stunning film for a franchise that’s truly beloved.”
The Hidden World – the final chapter in the acclaimed animated trilogy – now has the biggest domestic opening of the year so far, topping M. Night Shyamalan’s Glass – although with Captain Marvel just around the corner, that record isn’t going to stand for long.
Having grossed $216.9 million internationally, How to Train Your Dragon 3 has currently grossed $274.9 million worldwide. The first movie made $494.9 million back in 2010, while How to Train Your Dragon 2 earned $621.5 million.
