After finding their lead back in January in Emmy Award-winner Matthew Rhys (The Americans), it has now been announced that Team Downey’s Perry Mason reboot has received a series order from HBO.
Here’s the official description for the series:
While the rest of the country recovers from the Great Depression, this city is booming! Oil! Olympic Games! Talking Pictures! Evangelical Fervor! And a child kidnapping gone very, very wrong! Based on characters created by Erle Stanley Gardner, the limited series follows the origins of American Fiction’s most legendary criminal defense lawyer, Perry Mason. When the case of the decade breaks down his door, Mason’s relentless pursuit of the truth reveals a fractured city and just maybe, a pathway to redemption for himself.
The new take on the iconic lawyer was originally set up as a starring vehicle for Robert Downey Jr. with Nic Pizzolatto (True Detective) writing, only for Downey’s feature film commitments to lead to a change in plans. He remains attached as an executive producer alongside Susan Downey and showrunners Rolin Jones and Ron Fitzgerald, while Tim Van Patten (Game of Thrones, The Sopranos, Boardwalk Empire) will direct.
