A simple search on this very website will tell you that over the years there have been rumours abound that Tim Burton and Michael Keaton would once again open the door to the afterlife and utter “Betelgeuse, Betelgeuse, Betelgeuse”, summoning a sequel to their 1988 hit Beetlejuice.
While doing the rounds for their recent reunion on Disney’s live-action Dumbo, USA Today took the opportunity to ask Burton about the possibility of a sequel, and it might not be the news fans of the pesky spirit were hoping to hear.
When asked about the state of the project, which Warner Bros. hired a writer for back in 2017, Burton replied with “nothing, nothing”, before being pressed by the reporter about whether it was going to happen, to which he responded “I don’t know. I doubt it”, before dismissing further questions.
USA Today then approached the studio, where spokeswoman Candice McDonough all but confirmed Beetlejuice was set to remain in the waiting room, by stating that “the project isn’t in active development.”
What do you make of this news? Did you ever really want a sequel to Beetlejuice, or is it one of those films that should remain untarnished by a desire to fan the flames of nostalgia? Let us know what you think using the comments section below or tweet us @FlickeringMyth…
