It looks like John Cena is set to join the DC Extended Universe for his first comic book movie role, as Variety is reporting that the WWE Superstar is in talks to join the cast of James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad.
Gunn is writing and directing the supervillain team-up, which has been described as a “total reboot” of the 2016 movie, although it is bringing back a number of cast members including Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang) and Viola Davis (Amanda Waller).
Idris Elba (Avengers: Infinity War) was recently announced as joining the cast, originally as a replacement for Will Smith in the role of Deadshot, although it has since been announced that he’ll now be portraying a new character. As yet, there’s no word as to who this is, or who Cena could be playing.
Cena was most recently seen on the big screen in the Transformers spinoff Bumblebee, while his upcoming film credits including the Dwayne Johnson-produced The Janson Directive, comedy Playing With Fire, and fantasy adventure The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle.
The Suicide Squad is set for release on August 6th 2021 and filming is expected to get underway in the summer.
