The Flickering Myth writing team share their thoughts on the latest Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer and the post-Endgame MCU possibilities…
Marvel Studios and Sony gave us our first glimpse at the post-Avengers: Endgame Marvel Cinematic Universe with the release of a new trailer for July’s Spider-Man: Far From Home, and here’s what our writing team made of this latest look at the closing chapter of Phase Three of the MCU.
Eammon Jacobs: Although I was worried that this might end up being a disappointment after the Endgame spectacle – this trailer restored my faith. Everything from Mysterio and the larger multiverse ramifications, to Peter’s journey overcoming grief. Very excited about this.
EJ Moreno: I-I-I don’t know what to really say. It looks cool? Yeah, let’s go with it looks cool. Not sold on it from a story standpoint, but can’t knock them for trying this direction so soon after Endgame. The Mysterio look is striking and love Jake in a big role like this. Sadly, the trailers aren’t doing a good job of not making it obvious he’s still the baddie. I wonder how much is really an illusion…

George Chrysostomou: I love the direction this is going in. Homecoming is probably my favourite MCU film and I think this could surpass it if it carries on going in such a great direction. Visually it’s looking stunning but I’m so intrigued by some of the larger universe, or rather multiverse, plot points that are being included.
Gerald James: I’m really hoping that the multiverse thing is just misdirection as we are learning about it from Mysterio. My fear is that introducing something like that just opens up the whole ability to undo things that might be otherwise permanent. Time travel already lays the groundwork for that but this just further lets them avoid continuity if they choose to.
Tai Freligh: I’m excited for this. I think it touches on the right tone for Peter after Endgame’s conclusion. Sometimes you don’t get a break when you’re a superhero and vacation is just not happening. I think Mysterio is lying out the side of his mouth about being from another planet, so the multiverse thing is a red herring. If he’s the bad guy, then why is Nick Fury working with him? I can’t wait. Looks like a fun movie and a fitting conclusion to the first arc of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Plus, we get to see characters work through what happened in Endgame.
Allen Christian: I think the multiverse thing plays exactly into the direction I think they’re going with for the next 10 years. This trailer is the first one that made me want to see this movie, but this character still isn’t Spider-Man to me.
Sade Green: Enjoyed it! Not really sure what the story is but I liked the continuation from Endgame. Nice to see Happy there too!
Scott Watson: Bitch, please. You’ve been to space… Best. Line. Ever. Tone and feel looks on point to me, and it’s brilliant to see them dropping the multiverse in there too, it opens up so many possibilities.
Andrew Newton: Really enjoyed the trailer, Tom Holland is the best Spidey ever and the whole multiverse thing brings so many possibilities.
Eric Bay-Andersen: On the whole, a great trailer. Wasn’t crazy about MJ’s line – a potentially huge plot point treated as a throwaway joke? Nick Fury’s line, however (“Bitch, please – you’ve been to space”) is already one of the year’s best. The multiverse thing sounds interesting, I just hope it doesn’t open the door for cameos from departed characters – cheapening Tony’s glorious end would be particularly unwise. The big CGI battles with the elementals have a hint of Spider-Man 3 about them, but I have faith that the cast, writers and directors will still make this an entertaining and emotional film.

Caillou Pettis: An overall really strong trailer. It was quite interesting to see how the events of Avengers: Endgame impacted not just Peter, but the rest of the world. Curious as to how they are going to explore the whole “multiverse” concept and how Jake Gyllenhaal’s Mysterio will be handled.
Tom Beasley: I had little or no interest in this film before this trailer, but I’m now completely on board. The multiverse thing is fascinating and I am very glad that Marvel is embracing the very different world created by the Thanos story, rather than just resetting everything back to normal. Now that Spidey is one of the key Avengers, it makes sense that his films have to move away from their “friendly, neighbourhood” tone. The road they’re walking with Mysterio is an interesting one too. There’s an inevitable heel turn on the horizon, but it looks like Gyllenhaal is going to get chance to play a lot of shades of that character. I am 100% into this now, so this has to go down as a massively successful trailer.
Well, it seems there’s plenty of excitement among the Flickering Myth writing team, with the trailer doing a very good job of selling the sequel to those who may have been on the fence about the wall-crawler’s second solo MCU outing.
