Rumour: Marvel’s Black Widow movie to take place after Captain America: Civil War

May 20, 2019 by Gary Collinson

Although it’s never officially been confirmed, it’s been widely assumed for some time now that Marvel’s Black Widow solo movie would be a prequel exploring the origins of Scarlett Johansson Natasha Romanoff and her defection from Russia to the United States.

Well, as we now know from Avengers: Endgame, Black Widow is indeed going to have to be a prequel, but if a rumour from MCU Exchange is to be believed, the actual setting of the movie within the Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline is going to come as a surprise.

According to the site, Johansson’s Avengers co-star Sebastian Stan – who has long been rumoured to be reprising his role as the Winter Soldier in the film – has revealed during an convention appearance in Italy that Black Widow actually takes place following the events of Captain America: Civil War.

Now, we have to stress this is a rumour at present as the site doesn’t actually include any direct quotes from Stan, but if the info is legit then it certainly raises a few questions. Black Widow will be on the run with Captain America and his Secret Avengers team, so can we expect any cameos from Chris Evans (Captain America), Anthony Mackie (Falcon) or Elizabeth Olsen (Scarlet Witch)? Will we be visiting Wakanda again, seeing as that’s where Bucky is? Or will the main story be intercut with flashbacks, the Winter Soldier appearing there instead? Let us know your thoughts in the comments, or tweet us @FlickeringMyth…

Black Widow is being directed by Cate Shortland (Lore), with Scarlett Johansson set to star alongside David Harbour (Hellboy), Florence Pugh (Fighting With My Family), Rachel Weisz (The Favourite) and O-T Fagbenle (The Handmaid’s Tale).
