Disney’s Aladdin passes $800 million at the global box office

June 24, 2019 by Amie Cranswick

Toy Story 4’s bumper opening wasn’t the only thing Disney has to celebrate this weekend, as Guy Ritchie’s Aladdin continues to bring in solid takings in its fifth weekend, the live-action adaptation having now pushed its global haul beyond the $800 million mark.

Aladdin held onto third place in North America for the third week running and has now grossed $287.5 million domestically, with a further $522.6 million from the international markets giving the film a magical $810.1 million and counting.

The film has now surpassed 2014’s Maleficent to become the fourth-highest grossing release of Disney’s animated reimaginings behind Jon Favreau’s The Jungle Book on $966.6 million (although with Favreau’s The Lion King incoming next month, Aladdin may not hold onto fourth for very long).

Also worth noting is that it is just $7 million short of 1996’s Independence Day, and so will soon become the biggest earner of Will Smith’s career.

Aladdin is directed by Guy Ritchie (King Arthur: Legend of the Sword) and features a cast that includes Mena Massoud (Aladdin), Naomi Scott (Princess Jasmine), Will Smith (Genie), Marwan Kenzari (Jafar), Navid Negahban (The Sultan), Nasim Pedrad (Dalia), Billy Magnussen (Prince Anders), Numan Acar (Hakim), Alan Tudyk (Iago) and Frank Welker (Abu).
