It’s been almost exactly five years since Warner Bros. first announced its plans for a big screen adaptation of the iconic 1978 video game Space Invaders, and now comes word from Deadline that the project has found a new screenwriter.
Fresh from penning the upcoming James Wan-produced Mortal Kombat movie, writer Greg Russo has now signed on to script the feature adaptation of the classic arcade game. Russo has plenty of experience in the video game movie realm, having worked on Constantin Film’s Resident Evil reboot, along with director F. Gary Gray’s planned Saints Row film.
The Space Invaders movie is being produced by Akiva Goldsman, Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell, while Daniel Kunka (12 Rounds) previously worked on the screenplay.
Space Invaders tasks players with defending mankind from wave after wave of alien attackers. Released by Taito back in 1978, the game proved hugely successful, pulling in some $2 billion in quarters and becoming the first title to sell over a million units on home consoles.
