The Russo Brothers say Bucky’s “damaged mind” is why he didn’t receive Cap’s shield

August 21, 2019 by Liam Waddington

Anthony and Joe Russo, the directors of Avengers: Endgame, have said that the reason Bucky didn’t receive Captain America’s shield at the end of Endgame was down to his “damaged mind.”

In a YouTube video by Wired (via ComicBook.com), the Russo brothers answered fan questions about the film where they gave the reasoning why Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) was granted Cap’s shield instead of Steve Roger’s lifelong best friend.

“The thing we’ve loved exploring about Bucky is [that] he’s got a very complicated history. He has a damaged mind. You don’t want to hand a very powerful weapon to somebody who is vulnerable like that,” Anthony said.

However, Joe has stressed that Sam is just as deserving of the iconic shield as anyone else: “Falcon is an amazing character who is certainly very deserving of the shield.”

Despite the fan divide between who should have been given the shield between Sam and Bucky, the Russos are doubling down on their final decision to pass on the mantle of Captain America to Falcon for the foreseeable future.

Are you happy they gave the shield to Falcon? Do you think Bucky could hold the shield either in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier Disney+ series or further down the line? Let us know in the comments below or tweet us @flickeringmyth…
