As The Suicide Squad edges towards production, writer-director James Gunn has taken to social media to respond to a fan who enquired whether there was any truth to a recent rumour suggesting that Zatanna could be set for a cameo appearance in the DC ensemble – and it seems the original report has been conjured from thin air.
“I have nothing against Zatanna, but I have no idea where some of this stuff comes from,” wrote Gunn. “I never even thought of including her in The Suicide Squad (nor many of the other characters I keep hearing are in the film). I can’t comment on every rumor but just know many aren’t true. Away rumors!”
As it happens, this isn’t the only Zatanna rumour that’s been doing the rounds recently, as it was claimed back in December that Warner Bros. and DC Films have been considering a solo movie for the character, who was previously set to appear in the unrealised Justice League Dark movie from Guillermo del Toro. So far however, that remains unconfirmed.
What we do know about Gunn’s The Suicide Squad is that it will see the return of Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), Viola Davis (Amanda Waller), Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang) and Joel Kinnaman (Rick Flag), along with David Dastmalchian (Ant-Man) as Polka-Dot Man, Daniela Melchior (Valor da Vida) as Ratcatcher, Steve Agee (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2) as King Shark and Idris Elba (Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw), John Cena (Bumblebee), Nathan Fillion (Firefly), Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok), Storm Reid (A Wrinkle in Time) and Peter Capaldi (Doctor Who) in as-yet-unrevealed roles.
The Suicide Squad is set for release on August 6th, 2021.
