William Hurt returning as Thunderbolt Ross in Marvel’s Black Widow

October 6, 2019 by Gary Collinson

With additional photography taking place on Marvel Studios’ Black Widow movie, Just Jared has posted some new set photos from the Scarlett Johansson-headlined solo movie which reveal that William Hurt is reprising his role as Thunderbolt Ross.

Actor William Hurt was spotted on the set of Marvel's "Black Widow" movie and there's a theory about what he is filming! https://t.co/7MS69sd4Sr

Hurt made his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk, and has since reprised the role in Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

Given that Black Widow takes place after Civil War, Ross will presumably be looking to have words with Johansson’s Natasha following her actions in that film, where she helped Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) to escape the battle in Germany. However, there’s also been some speculation that Hurt could appear in a post-credits scene, setting up a potential Thunderbolts movie…

William Hurt, aka Thunderbolt Ross, is currently on the set of what I believe to be additional photography for 'BLACK WIDOW.' ScarJo is not believed to be there. Could Ross be visiting with Yelena in a post credit scene setting up a 'THUNDERBOLTS' project? That I cannot confirm. pic.twitter.com/bNS3RpWvJN

Black Widow is being directed by Cate Shortland (Lore) and sees Scarlett Johansson reprising her role as Natasha Romanoff alongside Florence Pugh (Fighting With My Family) as Yelena Belova, O-T Fagbenle (The Handmaid’s Tale) as Mason, David Harbour (Stranger Things) as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, Rachel Weisz (The Favourite) as Melina Vostokoff/Iron Maiden, and Ray Winstone (Sexy Beast) and Olivier Richters (The King’s Man) in as-yet-unrevealed roles. William Hurt (Thunderbolt Ross) and Robert Downey Jr. (Tony Stark) will also reportedly feature.
