Joker star Zazie Beetz says you can question everything that happened in the film

October 10, 2019 by Samuel Brace

Zazie Beetz, one of the stars of Joker, says that much of the film is up to interpretation.

While Joker is busy bringing in big numbers at the box office, those who have seen it are wondering just how much of the film was real, thanks to some game-changing reveals later in the movie.

It turns out that the relationship between Zazie Beetz’s Sophie and Arthur was just a fiction of his imagination, which really frames the Joker as an unreliable narrator for all that we have seen in the film. Speaking to THR, Beetz comments on how much of the film is up for interpretation:

“I think that the entire film is all through Arthur’s point of view, almost the entire thing, so, to an extent, you can question the interpretation of anything in this film… …So, Sophie just started inserting into his brain rather than necessarily being a whole physical character outside in the story. I think everything transitioned into Arthur’s POV more.”

Joker is certainly a film that demands repeat viewings and fans will surely be discussing its plot points for quite some time to come.

Joker centres around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone story not seen before on the big screen. The exploration of Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix), a man disregarded by society, is not only a gritty character study but also a broader cautionary tale.

Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix (The Sisters Brothers), Robert De Niro (Goodfellas), Zazie Beetz (Deadpool 2), Bill Camp (Red Sparrow), Frances Conroy (American Horror Story), Brett Cullen (Narcos), Glenn Fleshler (Billions), Douglas Hodge (Penny Dreadful), Marc Maron (GLOW), Josh Pais (Motherless Brooklyn), Shea Whigham (Kong: Skull Island), Douglas Hodge (Robin Hood) and Dante Pereira-Olson (You Were Never Really Here).
