Ewan McGregor confirms the Obi-Wan Star Wars series was initially planned to be a movie

October 29, 2019 by Liam Waddington

After fourteen years we finally have confirmation that Ewan McGregor will be reprising his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi for a Disney+ Star Wars series. And now McGregor has confirmed reports that the project was initially conceived to be a movie until the focus shifted to redevelop it into a TV series in the wake of the box office failure of Solo: A Star Wars Story.

“It wasn’t always going to be a series, not initially,” McGregor shared with ComingSoon. “When we first started talking about, that wasn’t really in the cards but everything’s changed so much, so quickly. It’s really exciting that it is now. I’m really into the idea to be able to tell the story over several hours instead of just one hit. I think it’s going to be quite cool.”

McGregor debuted his portrayal of Kenobi in 1999’s Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, with his last performance being in the final episode of the prequel trilogy, Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. However, he did provide a small voice cameo during Rey’s vision in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

The Kenobi TV series is set to consist of six hour-long episodes and takes place eight years after the events of Episode III, where we saw Obi-Wan delivering a newly born Luke Skywalker to his brand-new home on Tatooine. However, there are no specific story details as of yet.

The series will be written by Hossein Amini (The Alienist), with Deborah Chow (The Mandalorian) directing. Chow, Amini, and McGregor will serve as Executive Producers alongside Kathleen Kennedy, Tracey Seaward (The Queen) and John Swartz (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story).
