Legendary director Francis Ford Coppola has clarified his Marvel movie comments in a recent interview.
Francis Ford Coppola is responsible for some of the greatest movies in history, including the likes of The Godfather and Apocalypse Now. But recently he has been in the news along with fellow icon Martin Scorsese for his critique of Marvel movies.
Well, in a recent interview with Deadline, they asked him to clarify his comments where he had been reported to call Marvel films “despicable”. Coppola says this was a translation error and shared his true thoughts on the MCU:
“Personally I don’t like the idea of franchises, the notion that you can keep repeating what is essentially the same movie for financial gain — in other words, what is a formulaic approach.
“I feel that approach is taken to reduce the economic risk of movies, and I feel the ‘risk factor’ is an element that makes movies sometimes be great. Also, the formulaic film draws most available resources to them, leaving little for more daring productions, reducing diversity.
“In some ways I think the cinema is like food; certainly you can add things to make it tempting, tasty and enjoyable but it must also be nutritious to qualify as real food.”

Of course, all opinions are welcome when it comes to movies and the man deserves respect. There’s certainly room for all different tastes when it comes to film and unfortunately for Francis, the MCU isn’t going anywhere soon.
