John Stankey, the head of WarnerMedia and man leading the charge for HBO Max, is questioning how many of Disney+’s initial 10 million subscribers will be there after six months.
The streaming space is becoming an ever-crowded one, with Disney+ the latest behemoth to enter the fray. It has proved to be a successful start for the platform, with a reported 10 million subscribers on day one. But how long will this last?
This is the question that John Stankey, the WarnerMedia exec behind HBO Max is asking. HBO Max will also be entering the streaming space soon but at Recode’s Code Media conference on Monday (via Variety) he commented on Disney+:
“[Disney] did a good job, good for them. They’re off to a good start. Obviously, we start with a little different position with a different product, and we’d like to see as many HBO customers migrate as possible.
“The bigger trick here for most of these streaming services is how many of those 10 million customers are there in 6 months?”
Customer retention is certainly a big factor in such a competitive space. Disney+ is off to a great start but it will be interesting to see if they can match the likes of Netflix and Amazon Prime in the months and years to come.
