Last month it was rumoured that the upcoming live-action DC series Stargirl could be on the move from the DC Universe service to The CW, and now comes word that the show will indeed be airing on the network, albeit the day after its exclusive premiere on the streaming app.
As reported by Deadline, each episode of Stargirl will air on The CW on a weekly – adding to the network’s slate of DC shows alongside Arrow, The Flash, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Supergirl, Batwoman and Black Lightning – and will also be available on The CW’s free digital apps.
With questions remaining about the long-term future of DC Universe given Warner’s upcoming HBO Max service, Stargirl becomes the first of its original series to air on network television. It has however been announced recently that the second season of Doom Patrol will be available on both DC Universe and HBO Max, although the recently renewed Titans remains exclusive to the DC subscription service (for the time being anyway), as does the upcoming Harley Quinn adult animated series.
Stargirl will follow the story of Courtney Whitmore (Brec Bassinger) who is a smart, athletic and above all else kind girl. This high school teenager’s seemingly perfect life hits a major speedbump when her mother gets married and her new family moves from Los Angeles, California to Blue Valley, Nebraska. Struggling to adapt to a new school, make new friends and deal with a new step-family, Courtney discovers her step-father has a secret; he used to be the sidekick to a superhero. “Borrowing” the long-lost hero’s cosmic staff, Courtney becomes the unlikely inspiration for an entirely new generation of superheroes.
Featuring in the cast of Stargirl are Brec Bassinger (Bella and the Bulldogs) as Stargirl, Amy Smart (Justified) as Barbara Whitmore, Luke Wilson (Roadies) as Pag Dugan, Trae Romano (Robbie) as Pat Dugan, Joel McHale (Community) as Starman, Lou Ferrigno Jr. (S.W.A.T.) as Hourman, Brian Stapf (The Walking Dead) as Wildcat, Henry Thomas (The Haunting of Hill House) as Dr. Mid-Nite, Joy Osmanski (The Santa Clarita Diet) as Tigress, Neil Hopkins (Matador) as Sportsmaster, Nelson Lee (Mulan) as Dragon King, Meg DeLacey (The Fosters) as Cindy Burman, and Anjelika Washington (Young Sheldon), Yvette Monreal (Matador), Christopher James Baker (True Detective), Neil Jackson (Westworld), Hunter Sansone (Drama Drama) and Jake Austin Walker (Rectify) in undisclosed roles.
