Given the billion dollar success of Aladdin, it will come as little surprise to hear that Disney has announced a spinoff from this year’s live-action reimagining of the classic animated movie – although what may come as a surprise is that it’s set to revolve around the minor character Prince Anders, played by Billy Magnussen.
THR is reporting that the Mouse House has enlisted rising screenwriters Jordan Dunn and Michael Kvamme to pen the script for a film based around the prince of the fictional kingdom Skanland, who appears in Aladdin as a potential suitor for Princess Jasmine (Naomi Scott).
The report goes on to reveal that the project is being eyed as an original film for the Disney+ streaming service, and will see Magnussen reprising his role as Prince Anders. It also stresses that the movie won’t be a sequel to Aladdin – although that is also in the early stages of development at the studio (which will likely be music to the ears of Mena Massoud, who revealed this week that he hasn’t had a single audition since Aladdin came out earlier this year).
Aladdin is directed by Guy Ritchie (King Arthur: Legend of the Sword) and features a cast that includes Mena Massoud (Aladdin), Naomi Scott (Princess Jasmine), Will Smith (Genie), Marwan Kenzari (Jafar), Navid Negahban (The Sultan), Nasim Pedrad (Dalia), Billy Magnussen (Prince Anders), Numan Acar (Hakim), Alan Tudyk (Iago) and Frank Welker (Abu).
