Frozen 2 becomes the sixth Disney release to pass $1 billion at the box office this year

December 15, 2019 by Amie Cranswick

Walt Disney Pictures’ unprecedented year at the box office continued this weekend as the Disney Animation sequel Frozen II became the studio’s sixth release of the year to pass the magical $1 billion mark worldwide.

Adding $19.2 million domestically and a further $55.7 million from international markets, Frozen II has now amassed $1.033 billion in four weekends of release. It’s on course to become the biggest animated sequel ever (a record currently held by Minions on $1.1 billion) and will likely end up close – on either side – to the first Frozen’s $1.276 billion from back in 2013.

Frozen II joins Avengers: Endgame (a record $2.798 billion), The Lion King ($1.656 billion), Captain Marvel ($1.130 billion), Toy Story 4 ($1.074 billion) and Aladdin ($1.051 billion) as Disney’s billion dollar hits in a year which has seen the Mouse House gross over $10 billion worldwide. And that’s with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker still to come this weekend…

Frozen 2 sees Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel, Josh Gad and Jonathan Groff returning to voice the characters of Anna, Elsa, Olaf and Kristoff alongside Frozen newcomers Evan Rachel Wood and Sterling K. Brown.
