Having seemingly got the fans back on board after revamping the design of its iconic character following the backlash to the first trailer, Paramount Pictures’ delayed Sonic the Hedgehog movie looks set to win the Valentine’s Day weekend at the domestic box office with an opening of up to $30 million.
According to Box Office Pro, the Sonic movie can expect to pull in between $20 million and $30 million in North American on its opening weekend, which would put the film ahead of rivals Fantasy Island ($17 – $22 million) and The Photograph ($13 – $18 million).
Sonic the Hedgehog is said to have cost Paramount around $90 million, with a further $5 million pumped into the character redesign, and so with that kind of domestic opening, the studio will certainly be looking to the international markets in the hopes of turning a profit. And, while Sonic is of course hugely popular worldwide, as we all know video game movies don’t have the best of track records.
