Iron Man originally had a more gruesome death in Avengers: Endgame

January 9, 2020 by Samuel Brace

It has been revealed that Iron Man’s death in Avengers: Endgame was originally a violent and gruesome affair.

Avengers: Endgame certainly changed the MCU for good and one of the biggest moments was absolutely the death of Iron Man. The hero helped to save the universe from Thanos but it cost him his life to do so.

While his death hit home hard with fans, it turns out that originally it was going to be a much more gruesome and violent moment. Speaking to Insider, digital VFX supervisor Matt Aitken revealed:

“We gave the filmmakers a full range [of looks] to choose from and one of those was where the energy from the stones had acted right up into his face and popped one of his eyeballs out and it was hanging out on his cheek.”

Another VFX supervisor Jen Underdahl added: “We did do a Two-Face version where you got inside and you saw the sinews and you saw them in the teeth and that. It takes you away from this really powerful moment. You don’t want to be focusing on that or grossed out.”
