Moulin Rouge! director Baz Luhrmann has made another addition to his upcoming musical biopic based on Elvis Presley. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Maggie Gyllenhaal (The Dark Knight) is the latest to join the film and will star as Elvis’ mother, Gladys Presley.
Gyllenhaal joins a cast that includes Austin Butler (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) as Elvis, Tom Hanks (A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood) as Elvis’ manager Colonel Tom Parker and Olivia DeJonge (The Visit) as Elvis’ wife Priscilla.
The untitled film will “explore the life and music of Presley through the prism of his complicated relationship with his enigmatic manager, Colonel Tom Parker. The story will delve into their complex dynamic spanning over 20 years, from Presley’s rise to fame to his unprecedented stardom, against the backdrop of the evolving cultural landscape and loss of innocence in America.”
