Meet Squad 99 – ‘the Bad Batch’ – in Star Wars: The Clone Wars season 7 trailer

February 14, 2020 by Ricky Church

With the anticipated return of Star Wars: The Clone Wars arriving next week, Lucasfilm and Disney+ have released a new trailer for the seventh and final season of the hit show. In what seems to be a trailer for the first story arc of the season, we meet Squad 99, also known as ‘the Bad Batch’ – defective clones who still prove useful to the clone army.

‘Bad Batch’ consisted of a four-part story arc that was in development at the time The Clone Wars was originally cancelled after Disney bought Lucasfilm. Though never fully completed, Lucasfilm still showed the animatic reel at Star Wars Celebration 2015 and made the animatics available to watch on the official Star Wars website.

The story proved to be a favourite among fans. Due to its popularity – as well as the fact the animation was near completion – Lucasfilm and Disney+ seemingly chose it to be one of the stories in the final season. The official name for the Bad Batch, Squad 99, is named after a defective clone seen in the original series named 99 who was put to work as a janitor on Kamino, though he ultimately sacrificed himself to save other clones when the Separatists invaded.

From Dave Filoni, director and executive producer of The Mandalorian, the new Clone Wars episodes will continue storylines introduced in the original series, exploring the events leading up to Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith.

Created by George Lucas, with Dave Filoni as executive producer/supervising director, Star Wars: The Clone Wars stars Matt Lanter as Anakin Skywalker, Ashley Eckstein as Ahsoka Tano, Dee Bradley Baker as Captain Rex and the clone troopers, James Arnold Taylor as Obi-Wan Kenobi, Katee Sackhoff as Bo-Katan, and Sam Witwer as Maul.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars will premiere on Disney+ February 21st.
